Cult DVDs Galore

August 11, 2008 20:31 by kelly

Recently I was perusing several places where one can buy DVDs... some good, some bad, some classically cult-like in their followings. And I managed to find some doozies...

First, I found 2 box sets at McNally Robinson (a local bookstore which is now expanding into a chain) while doing some book shopping. In their clearance area, they had many a Monty Python box set. But then they also had the 2 box sets for an old 70's Brisith sci-fi show, The Tomorrow People. This is an old show about a group of teenagers who "break out" into having telepathic and other psychokinetic powers (kind of like mutants in X-Men hitting puberty and getting their powers). The cast changes from season to season (as any British show is wont to do), and also like many British shows maintains the same writer throughout the seasons (which at least gives it SOME sort of continuity... and if the writer doesn't like continuity he can't piss off previous writers because he IS the previous writer). These 2 box sets cover seasons 1-5 of 8 seasons in total, so I am missing the third box set. (I almost said "I need..." but it's not a need, more of a memory of this show from growing up watching it on YTV.

Then, on my way home from work tonight, I was thinking of having a cheesy movie night with some friends from my fraternity. We used to do it to episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000, but the downside to MST3K is that they are already making fun of the movie and you want to see how these guys make fun of it. Then I walked into Walmart and looked at the DVD section and have since come home with 4 "classic" cult movies that inspire drinking.

"Night of the Living Dorks" is described as "Imagine if George A. Romero filmed American Pie". It is high school nerds who die but come back as zombies who want the typical high school revenge. I have never seen this one... but with a title like that, and a tagline about George Romero, I could not bass this up. It is an import from Germany so it's bound to be dubbed or subtitled, but it is definitely gonna be worth it!

"Heathers" is a classic movie from the 80s starring Winnona Ryder, Shannen Doherty and Christian Slater. A somewhat dark comedy about teenage angst, murder, school explosions, and containing one of the most astounding quotes of all 80s movie fame ("f*** me gently with a chainsaw!"), this is definitely a cult movie to watch.

"Return of the Killer Tomatoes" features 3 primary things: 1) The return of the killer tomatoes (as if you didn't know); 2) the acting genius of John Astin (the original Gomez Addams, but also Buddy from Night Court (Harry's step-father)); and, most remarkably, 3) the introduction to the acting world of George Clooney. Yes, good old Clooney... you remember him right? He did 1 little-known show called ER, one rather popular show back in the 80s called "The Facts of Life" (yes, he was a regular in that show for a period of time),  but he was also the lucky SOB who got to wear the Batman costume with nipples.

Finally, one of the greatest "horror" movies of all time... "C.H.U.D.". Standing for "Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers", this movie had only one name I remotely recognized coming from it (and I had to look him up to see where I knew him from) - Daniel Stern. A name that is familiar but sometimes hard to place a face... But from where? Home Alone 1 and 2 - he was the OTHER thief... not Joe Pesci, but the other guy. And he was also the narrator's voice in The Wonder Years.

So yes, a plethora of cheesy movies to perhaps watch, drink, and have a good time to. Now I just have to plan for that night... for AFTER alt.net this weekend...
