Mobile choices

December 3, 2011 kelly Android

I have a number of mobile devices. Seriously. And they all travel with me almost anywhere I go:

  • iPod Touch (2nd Generation)
  • Samsung Focus phone running Windows Phone 7
  • Acer Iconia Tab tablet running Android Honeycomb 3.2
  • BlackBerry Curve (work device)

So, yeah, I have a bit of everything. I’ve been having a lot of fun learning the Android interface and development for that device and OS. I’m working on a few items for that device to help me out, both personally as well as in my day-to-day work responsibilities.

So realistically, why am I writing this? I haven’t been this excited about development in a long time. We have a number of environments and the landscape is definitely changing. Building an application for one environment does not necessarily mean it’s consumable everywhere, but in another sense it does. There are tools that permit us to build an application and deploy it to any number of devices with minimal code changes.

I’m also really starting to enjoy my tablet, and have several ideas for applications for that. I was going to do it in Mono for Android, as it would leverage my previous .NET skills, but then… why not just learn Java and both create something new and learn at the same time? So you’ll see my trials, tribulations and experiences over the next little while as I go about this.
